Character AI Chat - Login and the Official App
Updated: October 6, 2026
Logging into Character AI takes under a minute, for free, on the web at character.ai or inside the official app for iOS and Android. No card is needed to sign up, and the first reply from a character lands almost right away.
Sign-in runs through Google, Apple or an email address, which gets a one-time link instead of a password. Text chat stays unlimited on the free plan, and one account carries the same chats across web, iPhone and Android.
Character AI login: four steps to your first message
Logging in is quick, four steps from opening the app to a first reply, with no step that needs a card or a phone number.
1. Open character.ai, or install the Character AI app
Character AI opens in any browser at character.ai, or through the official app on Google Play and the App Store. The web version runs in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, and the homepage grid is browsable before logging in.
2. Complete the login
The login works through one of three options: Continue with Google, Continue with Apple, or an email address, which gets a one-time sign-in link instead of a password. No phone number and no card. Signup asks for a date of birth once, and under-18 accounts get routed to a teen-tuned model with a tighter filter.
3. Pick a character, or open the character builder
Picking a character takes a sort by trending or category, or a direct search, and the builder for making your own sits one tap away. Every card shows a sample greeting, tags, a star score and a comment thread. The comments carry more signal than the stars in most cases, since a card with active discussion tends to beat one sitting at 4.9 stars off three ratings.
4. Start chatting, set up a Persona, decide on c.ai+
Chatting starts with the first message, and a Persona, a short profile about you that the character reads, can be set up before or after. Text has no limit on either tier. Once Slow Mode and the mid-chat ads start getting in the way during evenings, that's the point where c.ai+ pays for itself through the priority queue and the longer memory window.
Character AI login problems and fixes
Most failed Character AI logins trace back to four causes, and each one has a quick fix.
The sign-in email never arrives
Email login on Character AI has no password: it sends a one-time sign-in link instead. When that link doesn't show up, search the inbox for "character.ai," check spam and mark the message Not Spam, then request a fresh link.
Open the link on the same device and browser where the login started. The company's own troubleshooting article adds two more checks: a full inbox, and an email domain the service doesn't support.
"Account not found" or an empty account
An account that looks missing was most often opened through a different login method. An account created with Google won't show up behind an email link, and the reverse is also true. The fix is to sign in with the same button used at signup.
"No longer eligible" after the birthday screen
This message is a date-of-birth check, not a ban. A birthday prompt rolled out in August 2026 locked some adult accounts out, and RoboRhythms tracked the workarounds: log in on desktop web first, or tap back on the prompt instead of submitting it.
A birth year entered wrong won't fix itself with time. That case needs a ticket through support.character.ai.
Login loops in the app
A login loop in the app clears with a cookie or storage reset. After an iOS update, clearing Safari-linked cookies through Settings and relaunching the app fixed it for me. On Android, Clear Storage forces a fresh login, and chat history stays on the account.
What Character AI actually is
Character AI is a free character-chat platform built entirely from characters other users have created, not a general-purpose chatbot. There is no blank "ask me anything" mode. It came out of public beta in September 2022 and shipped mobile apps in 2023.

Every character in the library was uploaded by someone else. The company's own copy describes "millions of community-created characters," without a precise count, browsable by category, tag and public score. Text chat has no cap on either tier. Voice calls work everywhere, capped at three a day on the free plan. Rooms puts several characters into one conversation thread at once.
The free plan needs no card and costs nothing to run beyond the browser itself. As of 2026 it carries full-screen ads mid-chat, a Slow Mode queue during peak hours, and a daily ceiling on Swipes, Go-ons and Memos through the Charms system, the app's internal currency.
What it is not: an uncensored chat tool. I never found an NSFW switch in my own testing, and the filter has only gotten stricter since 2023, with a sharper turn after the Setzer lawsuit was filed in October 2024 and another after the store rating moved up that same wave. Anyone returning on a 2023 account is logging into a functionally different product under the same name, which is part of why Reddit threads still argue about what changed.
Google licensed the underlying model in August 2024 and brought the founding engineers back in-house at DeepMind. Character Technologies kept running the consumer app on its own, with CEO Dominic Perella still making the day-to-day product calls.
What runs under the hood
Character AI runs on a proprietary model Character Technologies has never fully disclosed. The weights stay closed. Its roots trace back to the Meena and LaMDA research Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas led at Google before they left in 2021 to found the company.
There's no option to plug in your own API key. Character voice held up well across my longer sessions, which has been the app's clearest strength since launch. Factual accuracy is the weak spot: this was built for roleplay, not lookups. Ask a fantasy-roleplay character to explain a real historical date or a piece of software, and the answer that comes back is usually confident and often wrong.
Memory works in layers. Session context covers the active chat, Persona is a short profile read before each conversation starts, and Chat Memories, the long-term layer, carries details across separate sessions, running deeper on c.ai+ where the buffer is bigger.
A study out of MIT Media Lab and OpenAI surveying roughly 1,000 users found that people who chatted with a companion app more often also reported more loneliness and less time socializing offline.
The character library and how filtering works
The Character AI library holds millions of user-made characters, and filtering works through category tabs and search, not detailed tags. What's actually easy to find is a much smaller slice. The company's own copy says "millions" of user-submitted characters without a precise count, while the part that gets real traffic looks closer to the tens of thousands: the same cards keep resurfacing across the Trending row and the top tags, and manual browsing through a category rarely turns up more than a few thousand unique entries past that first layer.

Browsing runs through category tabs (Anime, Games, Movies & TV, Helpers, Assistants) plus a search bar, and the Trending row carries an editorial pass, which is where the strongest new characters tend to surface first.
Tagging is broad rather than deep: filtering works by category, not by personality type or appearance detail. Where it pulls ahead is catalogue depth for fan versions of specific existing characters.
Free plan versus c.ai+, side by side
Character AI has two tiers, free and c.ai+, and the gap between them is bigger than the pricing page lets on. Character AI free covers unlimited text with ads running between messages, a Slow Mode queue at peak hours, daily caps on Swipes, Go-ons and Memos, and three voice calls a day.
c.ai+ removes those limits and adds the extras below, for $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, about 20% cheaper when I paid annually. I never found a third paid tier; any listing selling a "Pro" or "Premium" tier is not the genuine product.
| Feature | Free | c.ai+ |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $9.99/mo - $94.99/yr |
| Text chat | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Mid-chat ads | Yes | None |
| Peak-hour queue | Slow Mode | Priority, skips Slow Mode |
| Response speed | Standard | Faster |
| Voice calls | 3 per day | Unlimited |
| Chat Memories | Basic | Extended |
| Imagine Gallery (image generation) | Not included | Included |
| Access to newest models | Standard | Early access |
| Character definitions | Standard length | Longer |
| 18+ chat styles | Not included | Included (mature framing, not explicit content) |
| Charms caps | Daily limit | Higher limit, plus pack bonuses |
| Chat customization | Basic | Extended |
| c.ai+ badge and community access | Not included | Included |
Content policy and what "adult" means here
There is no NSFW mode on Character AI, and c.ai+ does not add one either. The paid tier's "18+ chat styles" means darker, more mature narrative framing, not explicit content.

Push a conversation toward anything graphic and the result is either a filtered reply or the character stepping out of persona to decline. Romantic and emotionally close conversation is allowed; what the filter actually targets is explicit sexual content and graphic violence.
For adults, the app checks the usual technical boxes: HTTPS everywhere, chats kept private to the account, history that can be deleted, an opt-out for training-data use. The clause barring explicit sexual content sits in the community guidelines, though the company no longer publishes that clause's exact wording; third-party policy trackers like ConductAtlas catalogue that it exists without reproducing the retired text. Teen safety is the harder question.
A July 2025 survey of 1,060 teenagers from Common Sense Media found 72% of US teens aged 13 to 17 had used an AI companion app, from before the store listings moved to 18+. The joint assessment with Stanford Medicine's Brainstorm Lab rated the entire category an unacceptable risk for minors without active safeguards. This site itself is 18+ only: the age verification page explains the entry gate, and the 2257 statement covers why federal record-keeping rules don't apply here.
What the marketing promises versus what you get
Character AI's marketing and its actual day-to-day behavior diverge in four measurable ways, summarized from the testing above rather than a line-by-line quote match against the paywall copy.
| Claim | Reality |
|---|---|
| The "free" tier | Free of a card, with no download cost either. But by 2026 it runs full-screen ads mid-chat, Slow Mode at peak hours, and a three-call-a-day voice limit. |
| c.ai+ "18+ chat styles" | Not an NSFW switch. It's mature narrative framing and a small style picker. Explicit-content refusals behave identically on free and paid. |
| Ten million-plus characters | The catalogue size checks out. What's actually easy to find sits closer to tens of thousands, surfaced through the Trending row. |
| Character voice fidelity | Strong on tone, weak on facts. Built to stay coherent in a roleplay, not to be accurate. |
Old Character AI versus today
Old Character AI and today's version are not the same product, even though they share a name. The 2022 to 2023 version ran a lighter filter, with no ads, no Slow Mode and no Charms system.

Three waves of change tightened it. Moderation tuning through 2023 came first. The Setzer lawsuit, filed in October 2024 by Megan Garcia against Google and Character.AI, followed, bringing in Parental Insights, a separate teen-tuned model, and a jump in refusal frequency. Google and Character.AI agreed to settle that case on January 8, 2026. The 2026 monetization shift came last, adding full-screen ads and Charms metering.
Several threads on r/CharacterAI trace the complaint back to this exact timeline, most of them framed as "why is it so bad now," and that matches what I've seen testing the app myself.
There's no setting that brings the old behavior back. "The old version" usually means one of three things: unrestricted roleplay (Janitor AI or JanitorAI gets closest), fewer refusals generally (Chai runs a lighter filter on paid tiers), or no ads and no queue with the filter unchanged (c.ai+ buys exactly that).
Building your own character
Building your own character is free on both tiers and runs through a six-field form: name, avatar, greeting line, tagline, description, and definition, the persona sheet the model actually reads. Advanced settings add category tags, a visibility toggle, and a voice pick.
Quality lives almost entirely in the Definition and Example Dialogue fields; skip those and the character comes out flat.
c.ai+ gives a longer character definition field, which matters once persona sheets carry real backstory. There's no import for TavernAI or SillyTavern cards; the formats don't match.
The official app, and what to skip
The official Character AI app comes in two versions, iOS and Android, and the thing to skip is any third-party APK. I've tested both apps. On iPhone, it's Character AI: Chat, Talk, Text, App Store ID id1671705818. On Android, it's the official app, Google Play package ai.character.app. Both moved from 17+ to an 18+ rating on their store listings, confirmed on both stores in October 2026, and one login syncs across web, iOS and Android under one account.

Third-party APK sites are worth skipping on general caution. Searches for "character ai apk" or "character ai mod apk" turn up unofficial pages outside Google Play's own vetting, the kind of listing that commonly bundles adware or a credential-stealing overlay on other apps, though I don't have a named incident report specific to this app's APK to point to.
There is no legitimate "c.ai+ unlocked" APK, because subscription status gets checked server-side. If a region blocks the store listing, character.ai through a browser works instead of hunting for an APK file.
Where the official community lives
The official community runs across five channels, Discord, X, Reddit, the Help Center and Instagram, each checked below against the character.ai site footer. Anything outside this list, crypto wallets, "airdrop" claims, knockoff Telegram groups, is a scam.
Discord
The official Character AI Discord is reached through character.ai/discord, and the server carries Discord's own verified check. Character sharing, feature requests, event announcements, plus Plus-only channels for c.ai+ subscribers.
X (Twitter)
@character_ai covers version updates and new feature announcements, and it's the first place any outage confirmation tends to show up.
r/CharacterAI is the busiest Character AI Reddit community, at roughly 2.6 million members as of early October 2026. Bug reports, filter complaints, character showcases, troubleshooting threads.
Help Center
support.character.ai handles account recovery, billing disputes and deletion requests. Reported turnaround on r/CharacterAI runs inside 72 hours on weekdays.
@character.ai carries character art, event teasers and screenshots, often ahead of a new character drop hitting the homepage.
Character AI alternatives
Character AI has six alternatives worth considering, and which one fits depends on what's missing from Character AI: content freedom, memory depth, price, or a specific style. These six come up most often on r/CharacterAI when people go looking for a Character AI alternative.
| Platform | Category | Best for | NSFW | Library size | Starting price | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Janitor AI (also written JanitorAI) | Uncensored roleplay | Open content policy, large NSFW community | Yes, opt-in | Hundreds of thousands | Free, bring your own API key via OpenRouter | You manage your own key for reliable output |
| Chai | Casual companion chat | Mobile-first casual chat | Yes, paid tiers | Thousands | Free, Premium from around $13.99 | Reply quality depends on the model you pick |
| Replika | AI companion | One companion with long-term memory | Yes, Pro tier only | N/A, single companion | Free, Pro $19.99/mo | One character, not a browsable library |
| Talkie | Visual character chat | Visual-heavy, short exchanges | Limited | Tens of thousands | Free, in-app purchases | Leans toward card collecting over deep roleplay |
| PolyBuzz | Anime companion chat | Anime-styled companion chat | Yes, paid | Tens of thousands | Free, from $9.99 | Smaller public catalogue |
| Kindroid | Personal AI companion | A personal companion with long memory | Yes, paid | Personal characters only | From $9.99 | Not built for browsing a public library |
When it's slow or throwing errors
Most of what looks like a Character AI outage is server load, not a bug. During US evenings and European nights it shows up as Slow Mode: replies take longer, ads run more often, and the queue status shows in the chat header.
Waiting a few minutes and coming back cleared it for me every time. c.ai+ skips Slow Mode entirely, which is where most of its value sits for daily use.
A reply that comes back stripped down, or a character breaking persona to decline, is the content filter doing its job, not an error. Rephrasing the message gets the conversation moving again in most cases, and when refusals keep landing on the same thread, starting a new one works better than fighting the same session.
A 5xx error from character.ai after a hard refresh is a genuine outage. Confirmation shows up on @character_ai on X within minutes for anything widespread.
First-message openers that actually work
Three opener patterns work far better than a bare "hi," because they anchor the character to a scene before the first reply lands.

- Set the scene first. One line establishing where you both are and what's happening: "You're locking up the record shop and I'm the last customer still flipping through the crates."
- Reference something from their profile. A detail straight from the character's persona sheet: "Still mad about what happened at the cabin?" The model tends to grab the thread and run with it.
- Ask them to describe the room. "Look around. Tell me what you see, then say something." That produces a paragraph of setting to react to.
Quick answers to common questions
What is Character AI?
A free character-chat platform for talking, by text or voice, to millions of characters other users have built. It launched in September 2022, built by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, and runs at character.ai plus iOS and Android apps.
How do I log in to Character AI?
Go to character.ai on the web, or open the official app on iOS or Android, then sign in with Google, Apple or an email address. No phone number and no card required, and the login syncs across web and both apps on one account.
Is Character AI actually free?
Yes, unlimited text messaging with no card required. The free tier runs full-screen ads mid-chat, Slow Mode during busy hours, and a three-call-a-day voice cap. c.ai+ runs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (as of late August 2026) and removes those limits.
Is there an official Character AI app?
Yes. iPhone: the official app on the App Store (id1671705818). Android: the official app on Google Play (package ai.character.app). Both are rated 18+ as of October 2026.
Should I download a Character AI APK instead of using the store?
No. Third-party APK sites carry the general risks of any sideloaded app (adware, credential-stealing overlays, fake "filter removed" builds), and there's no verified safety benefit over the official store listing, which costs nothing extra to use.
Does Character AI have an NSFW mode?
No, not on either tier. c.ai+ lists "18+ chat styles," which means mature narrative tone, not explicit content, which is why people go looking for the old version or move to an alternative instead.
What's the best Character AI alternative?
It depends on what's missing. Janitor AI and JanitorAI for open content, Chai for a cheap mobile-first Premium tier, Replika for a single long-memory companion are the three that come up most often.
Why isn't Character AI working?
One of three things, in order of how often they come up. Server load during evening peak hours triggers Slow Mode first. A filter trip strips a reply or breaks persona next, and rephrasing clears that. A stuck login is the least common cause, and it clears after wiping cookies for character.ai, or using Clear Storage on Android.
